Study techniques that hold up, and the ones that do not

Most study advice is a list where everything is equally recommended. It is not. A few techniques have large, repeated effects, several have small ones, and two of the most popular have almost none — which matters more than any of the rest, because they are where the time goes.

Two techniques carry most of the effect. Almost everything else is a rounding error on top of them.

The two that carry the weight

Testing yourself, and spacing the sessions out. Retrieval practice and distributed practice are the two techniques that come out ahead in review after review, across subjects, ages and material types.

The ones worth adding

Explaining why. Asking yourself why a fact is true, and how it connects to what you already know, reliably outperforms learning it flat. It works because it forces the material into a structure rather than a list.

Mixing problem types. Practising one kind of problem twenty times in a row feels efficient and teaches you to recognise the pattern rather than solve the problem. Shuffling types is harder, scores worse in practice, and scores better in the exam.

Worked examples, early. When a topic is new, studying a full solution beats struggling through a blank problem. That reverses once you have the basics — at which point the struggle is the useful part.

The two that do not work

Highlighting. Repeatedly found to have close to no effect on later performance. It feels like engagement and it is mostly a way of reading while doing something with your hand.

Re-reading. Same story, and it is the most common study behaviour there is. It produces familiarity, which the brain readily mistakes for knowledge, right up until the material has to be produced from nothing.

Neither is harmful in itself. The cost is that they absorb the hours that retrieval and spacing needed.

Learning styles are not a thing

The idea that you are a visual, auditory or kinaesthetic learner, and should be taught accordingly, has been tested directly and repeatedly. Matching instruction to a stated style does not improve outcomes.

It persists because the preference is real — people genuinely prefer some formats. The preference just does not predict what they learn from. Match the format to the material instead: diagrams for structures, worked examples for procedures, speaking aloud for arguments.

How to actually change what you do

Change one thing for one course. Take the subject you have the most work in, replace re-reading with closed-book retrieval, and leave everything else alone for three weeks.

Redesigning your whole system in one weekend is itself a form of procrastination, and it is the one that feels most like progress.
