Body doubling: why working next to someone helps
Body doubling is working while someone else is present, doing their own thing. They do not help, they do not check on you, and they are usually not even working on the same subject. It sounds like it should not do anything, and for a lot of people it is the single most effective thing on this list.
The other person is not accountability. They are a reason for the room to be a working room.
What it is, precisely
One person works. Another person is present and also occupied. That is the whole arrangement. No supervision, no reporting, no shared task.
The name comes from ADHD coaching, where it has been used for decades, but the effect is not exclusive to anyone — it is why libraries are full during exam season and why cafés work for people who could technically work at home.
Why it works
The most convincing explanation is the least dramatic: the presence of another working person makes the alternative behaviours feel out of place. Scrolling next to someone who is writing is possible and it is slightly effortful, and slightly effortful is enough to tip the balance.
It also removes the moment of decision. If you have agreed to sit down with someone at two, you are not deciding at two whether to start — the decision was made earlier, by someone who was not yet facing the reading.
There is a third piece, harder to measure and reported constantly: working alone can be quietly demoralising, and it stops being so when someone else is in the room.
How to do it in person
Sit with a friend, agree the length, agree that you are not talking, and work on completely unrelated things. Unrelated is better than shared — a shared project turns into a conversation about the project.
A library or a café does the same job with strangers. The effect is weaker than with someone you have made an arrangement with, and it requires no arrangement at all, which is often the deciding factor.
How to do it online
A video call with cameras on and microphones off. Two minutes at the start to say what each of you is doing, then silence, then two minutes at the end to say what happened.
The opening and closing exchange is doing more than it looks like it is — it is a lightweight commitment at the front and a lightweight report at the back, and taking either out makes the session noticeably less effective. There are also public rooms and streams that run this format continuously if you have nobody to ask.
When it does not work
With someone who talks. One conversation resets the session, and a body double who wants to catch up is a social occasion with books on the table.
On work that requires speaking aloud, negotiating with yourself out loud, or pacing. Silence is part of the arrangement, and some work is not silent.
And it does nothing about a task that is undefined. If you sit down with a body double to "work on the essay" without knowing what the next action is, you will have a very peaceful hour of not writing an essay.
FAQ
What is body doubling?
Working while another person is present and occupied with their own separate task. They do not supervise, help or check in. The arrangement comes from ADHD coaching but the effect is not specific to anyone — it is the same reason libraries fill up during exams.
Why does body doubling work?
Mostly because the presence of someone working makes not-working slightly effortful, which is often enough to tip the balance. It also moves the decision to start earlier, to a moment when you were not yet facing the task, and it removes the quiet demoralisation of working alone.
How do I body double online?
A video call with cameras on and microphones muted. Say what you are working on for two minutes at the start, work in silence, and say what happened for two minutes at the end. The two exchanges matter more than they look like they do.
Does the other person have to be doing the same work?
No, and it is better if they are not. Shared work turns into a conversation about the work. Unrelated tasks keep it a working session rather than a meeting.
A body double solves the sitting-down problem, not the knowing-what-to-do problem. majored covers the second half — courses, deadlines and exams together on Mac, iPad and iPhone, with a focus timer for the session itself.
